I believe that we have been stuck for so long in religion and rituals activities, that when somehing new comes out and gives people an idea of what being Jesus follower is about, people tend to freak out and rebuke it.It is a pit, because I think the book is helping many to see that God is not what many people and churches have been preaching....it is all about love, relationship, repentance and forgiveness.Christianity in many ways have become another yok.I don`t think God has ever wanted that.God is just,by His justice is not like our justice,His judgement is not our judement.Above all,if this book is a heresy, why are you people so worried about it,God is big enouhg to sort it out,and make it a huge blessing as He has been doing, using many religious people to be a blessing around the globe.Take time on praying for people, loving people,I believe your time will very much appreciate,Papa will love to see you doing that!!I am just tired of the Christianity of today, too much ego,or I know better.I just wonder if we could have Jesus having His input here,I believe it would let many in shock, because He is not what many think He is.He is definitely Love and has extended it to all.I love the idea that we will have many surprises in heaven.I believe then we will understand what being a follower of Jesus is all about.Who sowed, who watered, who harvested,it will not matter, what will matter is that,we got to meet Him,somehow, somwhere and that all counts, and He will sort us out,as we walk with Him.The guy in the cross next to Jesus,He had never met the Lord, the place and circunstances were not perfect(should it be inside of a church??),still Jesus met him there, there was repentance, and he got saved.Meeting Jesus, through the book "The Shack",through reading the "Bible",through talking to a friend, through watching the "Beauty and the Best" it does not matter, what matters is that people will meet Him and fall in Love with Him,and allow Him to bring Salvation and healing as He has brought to so many so far,as well as to Mackenzie and his family.

By the way,how many people have we reached out for Jesus today??How many hours did we spend in His presence seeking his face."The Shack" has brought hope and desire to believe in God to thousands of people as we type in this website today.Lests love and help others in their journey with Papa,

Be blessed,

Isabel

I agree with many points you make and as a writer myself I was NOT impressed with The Shack. It read like a college student's creative writing assignment with an over-abundance of metaphors, it was "stiff" and lacked continuity and also lacked the very thing you would expect: a deep sense of spirituality in its flow of language. As a nurse who used to do Hospice I witnessed miracles, God's voice and I have felt the Peace or Grace that the book talks about. I got nothing from this book either spiritually, intellectually or even pure and relevant literacy. Why it got all the acclaim it did is beyond me, but then I am not your average American-Sunday-bible study person. I believe that Christ and God are one and everywhere and within us when He chooses it to be so.

I have read everything here and I must tell you...that I have grown very bored and unattatched of the "religious" foundation that have been created by man in all the previous years. I loved thid bok because it showed me that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit "LOVE" Me. It brought me back to where I was lost. What I learned is that Jesus took all my sin and yours with him to the cross, after that if you believe they (the trinity) lives in you if you ask and believe. I was always feeling guilty about everything that I believed in and tried to do, I am a sinner but through this book, I learned that all I have to do is ask and receive and that by the all powerful LOVE which is God is sustained in me. This book brought me back to salvation and i DO BELIEVE that God/Jesus and the Holy Spirit abide in me and that Through love all things are possible. I do not believe that there is false promise here, I believe that what the story is all about is that all of us simpletons are easier to forgive then we once thought. After reading this book I am so much in love with our Lord and Christ and the Holy Spirit you have no idea. I thought that I had to be religious every day and that is hard for us as humans, but knowing hat I can ask for forgiveness and not make the same mistake twice I have learned and I am saved. I also learned how to love many and enrich many relationships with my employees and how I can help them in their lives. Prais be to God for this book!!

Hi Lab,

First, sorry it took so long to moderate the comment. Just busy with things.

The problem is that people read this and WANT to base their beliefs on it. Good points at one area do not merit accepting heresy on any level. Even the serpent in the garden was right on points, that is what makes his argument so acceptable.

Like it or not, in every single aspect, God is Male. In our world of mass confusion, especially among youth where this book is heavily promoted, we do NOT need to add to the confusion under the guise of a new way of thinking about Christianity.

While I certainly agree (and even taught to some students the other day) that man-made laws are not good to keep on (Mark 7 and Romans 14 is where my text was from), we can not set aside the fact that the Bible sets forth a standard of conduct (they are listed in Mark 7 among other places). And let us not forget about Matthew 7:21-23. What exactly does that mean if there is not a correct standard. It is not about just coming as you are and staying there in a life of sin and expecting salvation. That is selfishness.

I just finished the book, and found it a good read, not something to base my beliefs on, but a tool to be used leading towards the truth. Where I also appreciate your review and
respect your observation, opinion, and also your knowledge. I agree that someone young in their journey could be misled, but I can also grasp a few points that the author was trying to make. Now mind you, I am not schooled, not an expert, just a sinner, saved by grace, on my journey, first, his using a female, as God, I found liberating. Why, because when we think of nurturing our thoughts go to our mother, therefore, in woman form, in this book and the reason for the meeting, God appeared as to the need of the person, Mack, who was hurting and needed a woman’s touch. I must confess also, that my expectations of what all three look like, will differ from everyone, on that glorious day, when face to face we meet. If man, was created, in God’s image, does that not include us
woman ? I mean, who was I fashioned after, because I am female.

I also understand that many church’s review is harsh because of the reference regarding the church, and conforming and also rule following. Regarding churches and religion, we have many, with different beliefs, ceremonies and teachings, but with common ground, Jesus. I believe, that the followers, the believers, are the church, the bride, that Christ returns for, not the actual church building or religion. Those who believe Gods word and except his gift, his son, Jesus. The reference to the Ten Commandments and freedom from the rules is open for discussion. In my opinion, it was the authors way of saying, look, we have rules and laws, but with God, there are none, come as you are and all are welcomed, for there is room for all, come, he calls us. And he doesn’t care what religion, only that now you come to him. Before the cross, we were under the law, after the crucifixion , it was finished, reconciled with God. And yes Jesus cried out, why have you forsaken me, God did turn away, he had to, because Jesus became sin for us all, and God is Holy, so, the reference to the scars on Papa, can be a simple explanation, to me I feel it showed that God was with Jesus, just as he promises to be with us, no matter what, and as I reflect back to scripture, Jesus when on the cross, cried out, Father forgive them, for they know not what they do. To me, I feel God was still with him, holding him, and ministering to him, just as he does and will for us.

As we look around, and we see all the suffering, and ask why God, or a child is hurt or murdered, child, meaning all God’s children, do we not ask why ?? This author showed God as a loving Father, who wishes that not one should perish, no, not one. And that God does not send the bad, the evil, but that he will use it to his good. Now I may be wrong, or taught wrong, but is that not in the Bible, John 3:16.

In closing, I found the relationship refreshing, as a visual, a mental note, seeing that our lifetime with all our instant gratifications, that sometimes seeing is believing, yet we believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, sight unseen, Faith. I enjoyed the friend scenario, John 15:13 - "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. Jesus called us friends. I have nothing concrete to hold in my hands, or to see with my eyes, but I believe, I believe that all will see the Glory, and every knee will bow, and all will stand before the judge, God. I walk away with a carefree open relationship, void of rules, laws and regulations, mans spin. And I walk into the arms of a Living and Loving Father. Lord I thank you, for all your hand provides, though I pray for
things to be better, my prayer is that your coming might be soon, for with you is where I wish to be, Amen

I just finished this book last night. I am shocked at the number of believers who are embracing this book and singing its praises. I completely agree with you. I think the book was a theological train wreck. Thank you for this well thought out and detailed explination.

I highly disagree with your last comment there. You are right to say that we must test everything against the Word of God. That is correct and that is exactly what I did. Recall Matthew 7; not all who call of Christ will enter. Whom did Jesus say in verse 23 would enter? Is that consistent with the message that is taught in this book?

i would like to say that whike reading this book I too wondered about the symbols being used and the vital message they may be sending to those who are reading THE SHACK, but as I continued to read it I too found it hard to put down. I actually read it in 4 seating which is unusual for me to even complete a whole book in less then a few weeks. I guess i was so ingrossed with the way I felt the book was speaking to me and how I too would like to see God as plainly as he was portrayed in this book. I could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit as I read parts of the book that unvieled things in my life that needed to be revealed and removed. I found the realism in the words that allowed me to forgive someone I have held a grudge in my heart against because of the pain she caused me, I have forgiven her and by doing that i have loosened her into the hands of God and I heard the Spirit remind how i had did it before with someone else and I could do it for this oerson also and still be able to face it each day.
I believe that no matter what material we read aside from the true Word of God we must prove it against the Word of God for its value. I see only good that can come from this book and that God will use it for His Glory! God Bless!

The problem with your view is that relationships overcome all doctrine, and that is simply not so. Take LDS, a dominant religion in my town. I have LDS friends and I can love them, but they are completely WRONG in their view and if they continue to embrace them, they will have deceived themselves into Hell. The purpose of my article is bring up these subtle things. How can I praise a book which views the Bible so negatively (see article above), how can I embrace a book that seems to confuse emotions with Holiness? What is Holiness? It is not a 'good feeling', but a separation from the world unto God.

If you study church history, you will find that every doctrine we have in the church is due to a heresy creeping up. As subtle as some of them were, it was important to clarify what is really taught in the scriptures, and I make it quite clear with scripture that this book teaches things that are not found in the Bible. I have a very well thought out list of problems with the doctrine of the book. Why don't you use the Bible as I have to correct me. Frankly, I do not see any context-specific verses in your condemnation of my work. List them Biblically and I will answer them.

You do comment on the 'basics' of the book, some of which I directly commended in my article, but the gross number of errors must not be overlooked and thus results in my not recommending this book.

Thanks for the post,
